What is Kayaking?

Kayaking is the sport or activity where people use kayaks to paddle across the water. There are many different types of kayaks and kayaking experiences, which can be found on just about any waterway throughout the world

The various types of kayaking is defined by the type of waterway that is maneuvered across in the kayak. There is typical kayaking that is done in canals, rivers, streams, and other mainly stagnant waterways. Whitewater kayaking involves taking a kayak down rapids. These rapids vary in intensity and often have a difficulty attached to them so kayakers know how rough the waters are. Ocean kayaking is getting to be more popular, which involves paddling in ocean waters and can include trips that last for days at a time.

Whitewater kayaking is the sport of paddling a kayak on a moving body of water, typically a whitewater river. Whitewater kayaking can range from simple, carefree gently moving water, to demanding, dangerous whitewater.

River rapids are graded like ski runs according to the difficulty, danger or severity of the rapid. Whitewater grades (or classes) range from II or 2 (the easiest) to VI or 6 (the most difficult/dangerous). Grade/Class I can be described as slightly moving water with ripples but for that reason is not considered 'Whitewater.' Grade/Class II/2 can be described as moving water providing some small degree of challenge. Grade/Class VI can be described as extremely severe or almost un-runnable whitewater, considered almost certain death, such as Niagara Falls.
